As kids across the UK get ready to head back to school, we asked members via Facebook their thoughts and to tell us what first inspired them to sign up.
From seeing Beefeaters up close to air shows you’ll never forget, experiencing the excitement and seeing the dedication of those who serve is a common reason for why many of our members first signed on the dotted line.
Paul C. – “At the age of 15, watching the news about the Falkland war, I just knew I wanted to follow in the footsteps of these brave men and women.”
Karl H. – “Lived on the edge of Salisbury Plain. Saw so much and just followed my thoughts. No regrets – enjoyed my career.”

Living the legacy
When you grow up seeing generation after generation of family members serving with honour, is it any real surprise that a career in the armed forces becomes something of a tradition? So many of you were inspired by parents or grandparents who served that following in their footsteps makes complete sense.
Leslie L. – “One of my grandfathers was a Royal Marine during the 1st World War, and my other grandfather was a stoker during the 1st World War. It convinced me to join the RB as a 15-year-old back in 1968.
Gill L. – “Both my parents served during WWII (Dad in the Royal Navy and my Mam in the WAAFS) so I joined the WRAC. Proud to have served.”
Jason B. – “Son of a soldier, grandson of a solider, became a solider and father of 2 soldiers. The family business so to speak.
