Festive traditions as shared by you

Christmas is coming!

As families gather across the UK, we know many of our members will be spending the festive season away from home.

That doesn’t mean you don’t celebrate, however!

While some of you may be taking part in some more traditional military traditions of carol services and gift exchanges, we know many create their own Christmas traditions to celebrate the festivities. We love hearing from these, so we asked you to tell us what your most memorable Christmas was and what traditions you love to follow for that little festive morale boost.

A little something

Whether you’re at home or on tour, you know as well as we do that the British armed forces always find a way to spread Christmas cheer!

Keith S. told us his cap badge always ends up “on top of my Christmas tree” while Emma G. enjoys “a shot of rum or port (or even both) when she wakes on Christmas morning, minus RSM knocking on the door”.

If you’re celebrating at home, say “cheers!” with 10% off and free delivery when you make an online order at Laithwaites! Alternatively, if you’re more of a beer fan, why not save 25% on craft beers from independent breweries at the Beer Depot?

Serving others

While those still serving don’t get to stand down fully to enjoy the festivities, troops still make the effort to sit and enjoy a festive lunch together – with officers serving soldiers as per tradition.

Iain C. and Tanya H. told us that each Christmas, “the junior ranks’ Christmas dinners are served by the senior ranks” though in Tanya’s case it’s always followed by a food fight.

We don’t envy the clean up after the sprouts start flying!

Giving back

For many of us, Christmas is about giving back and showing those we love how much we care. It’s about being part of something bigger and showing appreciation for our friends and colleagues for their efforts throughout the year.

Fran H. said that she and her colleagues would work on the wards each Christmas “so our married medics could be with their families” whereas Patricia B. used to work “so those with kids didn’t have to”

Many of our team will be spending time with their families this Christmas but that doesn’t mean we won’t be here to help you should you need it. Whether you’re in need of a discounted last-minute gift idea or just a little saving on stocking fillers, you know we’ve got you covered.
